To all those, including my buddy George, that did not consider Rutgers' outstanding football season as a local story, please see the following:
Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano will be a guest on Comcast SportsNet's "Daily News Live" Monday evening at 6 p.m. Schiano, the 2006 National Coach of the Year and BIG EAST Coach of the Year, will be in attendance at the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Awards Banquet on Monday evening in Cherry Hill, N.J. as the PSWA honors the Rutgers football team as its "Team of the Year."So, I guess I'm not alone in considering the Rutgers' football season a local story. However, it is kind of sad when all the local pro teams are so bad that we have to turn to a team an hour away in Central Jersey as the local team of the year.
The honor is the latest in a long list from a memorable 2006 campaign for Schiano and the Scarlet Knights. Four Rutgers players earned various All-America honors in 2006 while 14 players collected BIG EAST All-Conference honors, the most of any conference school.
The Scarlet Knights ended the season 11-2 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST after the program's first bowl championship. Rutgers defeated Kansas State 37-10 in the Texas Bowl to tie a single-season school record with 11 victories.
Rutgers made its first appearance in the Associated Press Top 10 rankings in 2006 and ended the season ranked 12th – the highest season-ending ranking in school history.

Wait, are you saying that you think it's just a local story, and not a national one? It has to be both.
Anyone who's serious about football has to recognize the fact that RU's turnaround this year is a near monumental feat.
You comments confuse me, oh Philly Phan.
No...my buddy George says that RU Football is not a local story, it is instead a NY/North Jersey story...I'm saying that the PSWA confirm that it is a local story...I think they limit the award to "local" teams.
So unless it's Rowan, college football doesn't exist down there?
According to George...yes. However, I think RU is a local story for Philly...just as much as PSU (which is 5 hours away) or Delaware U (which is an hour away)
Hey, State College is only 4 1/2 hours away and if driven correctly 3 1/2. But, I have to give Schiano credit his team won the "Texas" bowl. Joe Pa has never done that.
Yeah and Schiano has never shit himself on the sidelines, but he's young so there's still time to catch Joe Pa's accomplishments
If I didn't know better I'd think you'd been drinking out of Michael Vick's H2O bottle. Dream on.
All this shows is how bad sports are in Philadelphia when the media has to go to North Jersey to find a story.
Whatever..."local area team of the year" is the "local area team of the year....If it was PSU, would you say they are the "Western PA Team of the year"?
It would also not make sense to call PSU a local team. See, I am not biased against Rutgers. The school has just never really been a part of this area.
