A Head Scratcher

While I am pretty happy that the Birds signed one of the last NFL Free Agents of note, former Bears DT, Ian Scott, I can't say I fully understand it. All off season, the Birds' propaganda machine has promoted last year's first round pick, Broderick Bunkley, as the key to the success of the defense in 2007. I fully agree with this premise. If the Birds' run defense is to take a step up from last year's collossal disappointment, then Bunkley absolutely needs to be a force in the middle.

In theory, I agree with the Birds' front office that Scott, a 300 lb run stuffing DT, can help stabilize the middle of the defense along with Reagor, but I worry that these moves will delay Bunkley's development into a big time player. Since Bunkley will need a lot more playing time earlier in the year to establish himself, the presence of Scott and Reagor might prevent Bunk from getting the snaps he desperately needs. Hopefully, I'm wrong, and Scott/Reagor replace Darwin Walker/Sam Rayburn, and team with Bunkley and Mike Patterson to turn the defensive tackle position from a position of weakness to one of strength.

In any event, I'm starting to like the depth of players available at DT, DE and at LB. Sure, there are a lot of question marks, but when you have this many talented players available to fill starting spots, a good portion of the uncertainties are bound to work out in your favor.

Whoa...I gotta stop myself. I'm way too positive all the sudden. I'll reign myself back in with this comment. The Birds just gave a cool million dollars to a guy that has 2 sacks in 4 years. With those kind of stats, this guy better be a run defense specialist or he'll find himself out of a job pretty quick. Plus, with our luck with guys on one year contracts, I'm sure Ian Scott will be a one year wonder and then leave for huge dollars elsewhere.

Isn't that how things always play out for us Philly phans?

very little risk here. he may not even make the team, but i suspect he'll play in the rotation and on run downs. I like having a rotation especially at DT. even Buddy's teams had it going on w/ Pitts Golic Brown etc

Way too optimistic at the beginning of this article.
