Somebody Please Explain This To Me....

Yeah, I know I'm a day late on this, but....

Can someone please explain why Phillies phans gave a standing O to Jim Thome yesterday upon his return to Philly. I agree that the Thome experience was a pleasant one and he was one of the few athletes in recent memory that did not rip the city on his way out the door, but a standing O for a guy that didn't lead us to a post season birth? Really? I don't understand.

I would have been for some polite applause, but a standing O was totally out of question. I'm guessing people forget that Thome is the sole reason that we have Uncle Cholly as a manager. He was Thome's boy. Kind of like the Tito Francona/Curt Schilling relationship.

In any event, it wasn't a horrible thing that the phans did and it can't hurt in the karma department, but I'd love to hear why anyone thinks this reaction was necessary.

boy you're a bitter SOB these days. Not getting the loving at home i'm guessing. Its not easy on you when the wife is carrying your child.

He played hard for us and was a team player. He didn't put a towel over his head like Mr. One Hitter in Boston. Uncle Charlie has us in sole 2 in the East these days. Smile kid, everyday above ground is a good day.

Thome got the standing O because he was a class act and a phan favorite. If I were in attendance at that game, I would have stood for him too.

You made the perfect point when you mentioned that he didn't bad mouth the city on his way out the door. Plenty of guys haven't brought us a championship, only to rip us (usually the phans) on their way to the airport.

Compare him to Billy Wagner. Both Thome and Wagner both made games fun to watch, however what happened when they left town? Thome left with his class, but Wagner couldn't wait to bash us when he went to our most hated rival.

Thome may not have a ring on his finger from the Phils, but at least he was enjoyable to watch and a great guy to the fans.

We'll listening to WIP, Tony has 1 guy thinking like him. The Paul VI grad agrees that Thome didn't deserve the applause.

His a hard worker . . and Philly fans love hard working players eg. Pete Rose, Charles Barkley, Bob Clark(as a player), Lenny Dykstra Just to know a few that the city will alway cheer for.
