Our Special Teams Aren't Very Special

The Eagles lost this game for one single reason: Andy Reid.

Lets count the reasons why:

1. He did not get the team to play because of all of the distractions surrounding his personal life;

2. The offensive game plan was deplorable;

3. He did not get McNabb enough time in the first preseason to get him ready to play;

4. He let his only legit WR walk via free agency; and

5. His pompous nature led to a situation where this team had no legit punt returner on the team...let me explain:

Two years ago, the Birds wasted a draft pick on a pretty boy skier that had not played football in two years (Jeremy Bloom). Then, this past offseason, Reid let his one reliable returner leave via free agency (Reno Mahe), then brought in another veteran returner only to release him mysteriously before camp started (Bethel Johns0n). As a result, the Birds went into camp with only one returner (Bloom) and he promptly stunk up the joint throughout the preseason, which led to his release. The Birds then signed a competent kick returner (JR Reed), but did not have an experienced punt returner on the squad, so they decided to give the soft as silk Greg Lewis the job.

Obviously, this whole chain of events blew up in Reid's face and directly cost the Birds a game as misplayed punts led to 10 Packers points.

I hope this is a lesson to the Birds. You don't always have to make moves that will lead the league to believe you are the smartest guys in the room. Just make common sense moves that have a more logical chance of working out.

In any event, today's game was incredibly frustrating to watch. The offense was horrible. The wide receivers didn't excite me much and the run blocking was average at best. McNabb has a ways to go before he looks anything like he did last year. Here's hoping that Reid and Morningwheg can bring back last year's offense while McNabb gets back up to speed.

The main reason to be excited about today's game was the play of the defense. They really surprised me. I know the Pack doesn't have the most explosive offense, but the Birds' defense battled. I was real impressed by Takeo Spikes. Although, I'm pretty worried about Lito's knee injury. He seems to be injured all the damn time.

I'll try to forget this one, move one and get ready for the 'Skins next week, but as my man the Capt said today, "this won was a winnable game. Now we have to win one we expected to lose." Sometimes that's easier said than done.

Thanks to the 300 lb. meatball (and waste of a draft pick), Brodrick Bunkley for the zero tackles that he contributed to today's game.

Also, someone needs to sit down with the special teams guys and go over the rules for a punt.

Not sure what Bunkley did, but the defense played well especially against the run and got 4 sacks and missed three more. So, i can't bury Bunkley yet.

Also, the white safety played great as he's always in position to make a play, unlike that piece of shit Roy Williams in Dallas who got exposed again and again last evening.

Tony, looks to me like you are talking out of both sides of your mouth. I searched your blog for "Mahe" and found several instances where you slammed on him. Also, there is one blog where you said that Reid's personnel decisions were so good you were giving him free reign. Now that things aren't going so well you are (1) calling for Mahe to come back and (2) questioning Reid's decisions. You are a classic Monday morning, arm-chair quarterback and I think you could do with a little consistency.

WOW!!! The Phan getting called out...on his own blog....by a girl!!! I anxiously await "the response" to Eileen Mahe's post.

Eileen, what do you look like?

No, actually you are correct, Tony does speak out of both sides of his mouth. He is a flip flopper.

You must understand 30+ years rooting for teams in this city effect you as a person. The sky is always falling here, the worst is just around the corner. TO catches 2 TD's and doesn't cause a ruckus now that he's gone.

Its all bad, bad, bad today.

Eileen must not be from the Philadelphia area.

Maybe the coach was overheating from the zippered up black jacket and black hat he was wearing and couldn't think straight? How else can you explain that game?

The Flyers are having a rookie game at the Skate Zone vs. the Caps on Wednesday. I would like to go and see Downie tune somebody up.

Jorge,

Downie is about the size of Rob DiMaio...he will be starting the brawls, not sure how many he'll be finishing.

As for Big Red, maybe he was trying to sweat out the evil spirits surrounding his family.

Voegs,

Congrats. That was very well researched. Thanks for pointing out how to search for information on my site.

However, let's get a few things straight. It is my unalienable right as a Philadelphia Sports Phan to continually change my mind as I see fit. I’m sure my esteemed colleagues such as yourself have you ever changed coverage positions after receiving updated information.

In any event, to borrow a phrase from the immortal Deborah Metzger Mulvey, I’m perplexed by your response. I don't quite see the discrepancy in what I said previously about Mahe versus my view in my latest post. I said Mahe is "reliable". Clearly, he is a “reliable” punt returner in the sense that you never have to worry about him dropping the ball. He always makes the catch. Nonetheless, he sucked on the whole because he was about as slow as our systems at work. If you paid more attention to world of sports and less time planning baby/wedding showers, you would know that a player can be reliable at one aspect of his game, but suck on the whole.

A perfect example of this concept is Abraham Nunez of the Phils. He is a very “reliable” fielder, but hits like a girl. Since his crappy hitting overwhelms his "reliable” fielding, most would agree that he sucks on the whole. An even better example is Kyle Korver. He is a “reliable” outside shooter, but since he can’t beat anyone off the dribble or cover me on defense, he is a total liability on the floor and can’t play starters minutes.

As for Reid and his decision making, see my first point. I have the right to change my mind. I gave the guy carte blanche a month ago, but it has been revoked after his bull headed roster decision directly led to a loss. He now has to earn back my trust.

I hope this little lesson was helpful.

George, I'm from Philadelphia- born & raised in Northeast Philly and the daughter of a former season ticket holder. Tony, you've proven my point for me. Mahe is reliable but he sucks, you're glad to see him go, now you want him back. In contrast to you, Tony & George, I don't think that justfying spineless opinions on "I'm a Philadelphia sports fan" holds any weight. Either you like a player or you don't. In retrospect you may think Mahe is better than Lewis or Reed but hindsight is 20/20 and since you were so excited to see him go I don't see that you have a leg to stand on here. As to your flip-flopping on Reid's decision making abilities, justifying it by saying it's your unalienable right to change your mind b/c you're a Philadelphia fan (one who I might add has NEVER lived in Philadelphia) is pathetic. Just call a spade a spade, you lack any loyalty - even to the most successful Eagles coach in history - and your opinions change with the wind.

Wow, Phan. Eileen totally owns you on this board.

Whoa whoa whoa. Philly fans are only allowed to live in Philadelphia? Speaking as a guy from the Shore, and a Flyers/Birds fan, I'm kind of insulted.

Plus, just because you have an opinion, doesn't mean it can't change given different circumstances. When PSP lauds a player one moment and demonizes him the next, he's only doing what every sports fan EVERYWHERE does.

To imply that you, Eileen, have never in your life ever changed your mind about a Philly player seems a bit hard to believe.

I gotcha, Tone.

It is totally American to change you mind. If you go back 5 years ago, every red blooded American male would have told you that Britney Spears was the hottest piece of ____ out there. Now, fast forward to last Sunday’s MTV Music Awards and everyone thinks she is a drugged out, out of shape, lazy, has been who has two kids with a trailer park trash guy and is about 3 days from doing soft core porn on Cinemax. Are we all so crazy to have changed our opinion over those changed circumstances?

So Voegs, where are you to stick up for Britney Spears. Right about now, it seems like she could use a friend. Maybe you can provide a shoulder for her to lean on.

I'm digging this Eileen chick. She's got you figured out.
