I Really Don't Understand This One

Philadelphia Phans have spent generation after generation earning a reputation as being some of the most knowledgeable phans in the country. We are also clearly the most impatient bunch of phans this side of English Premiere League Football fans. That's why I'm so perplexed by tonight's handling of Pat the Bat's performance tonight.

Of course, it's great that the guy finally woke up this year and showed some power tonight on a day that he was openly called out by his manager. Sure, it was fantastic to see his two bombs and 5 RBI's. However, we all know this is more of the classic example of a blind squirrel finding a nut rather than Pat straightening things out and getting ready to go on a run.

I understand that the phans were just trying to give the guy some support with the standing O this evening, as we all know he is desperately needed if this team is to go anywhere this year. Although, I think the phans forgot something tonight...Burrell is the highest paid player on the damn team. Performances like tonight should be expected a couple times a month, not once or twice a season. As a result, tonight's reaction by the phans at tonight's game was totally irresponsible. I've never been more disappointed by a Philly crowd.

We gave this guy a free pass for the entire 2003 season (when he followed up a 37 HR, 116 RBI, .282 average with an average of .209, along with only 21 HR's and 64 RBI season) and were afraid to boo him despite his season long slump because we didn't want to alienate our perceived new superstar. Burrell has spent more time the last five years brooding, souring the clubhouse, partying and chasing broads than trying to help this franchise. He does not deserve standing ovations. He deserves the type of treatment this city usually reserves for classic overpaid, underachievers. As a result, I say boo the shit out of this sonuvabitch every chance you get until he proves that he can meaningfully contribute to this team.

If you can't tell, I've totally moved past the point of pessimistic with this group of Phillies. Matter of fact, I don't think you can take anything I say about this team seriously as I'm totally tainted for the foreseeable future.

You want us Yankee fans to send you some info on how we handled A-rod before this year? So far, the results from our discipline regimen seem to be paying off!
