Phils Lose Again, But Gain A New Closer

Yes, the Phils lost yet again to the Braves tonight. They lost 4-3 behind another average performance by the supposed new ace of the staff, Freddie Garcia. Garcia's start to 2007 has been an absolute flop. Through four starts, a capable major league pitcher should throw at least two games where he reaches the 7th inning. So far this season, Garcia has a 6.05 ERA and has yet to record an out in the 6th inning. Brutal...just brutal.

However, there were a couple glimmers of hope to come out of tonight's game. First, the Phils have finally given in and Brett Myers is now the closer by default as Flash Gordon has a "stiff shoulder". Flash is heading back to Philly to be examined by the team physician, but I wouldn't be shocked if he is shut down for a while. He just hasn't looked right all year and the guy is 39 years old.
Also, Ryan Howard finally hit another home run crushing a three run homer to center in the 6th. Hopefully, this homer and going out west will help the Big Man dial in his stroke.

In any event, things aren't going to get any easier as the Phils are heading out west for series against the Giants and the D Backs. At least we won't have to suffer through any more blown saves by Flash Gordon.

How many Barry Bonds home runs do our starters give up with this 4-game trip to SF?

That whole situation just makes me sick. Right now Bonds is only 12 away from tying Hammerin' Hank.

Well, I guess the fans and the media were right last year for moaning about the Phillies taking the cheap route and signing an old man as their closer. Gordon had a decent half season and then broke down just as everyone feared because of his age.
